The Singing Doctor
As far as I remember, my parents discovered that I have a talent in singing when I was still two years old. I can still recall the very first song that I learned. It was the “Happy Birthday” song that I sang for my grandmother during her 50th birthday celebration.
At the party, everyone should have a presentation for granny. Most of my cousins and aunts and uncles danced and sang in group while my parents thought that granny would be delighted if I perform a solo for her. They were right anyway. After my number, everyone was surprised when I was able to sing the song very well.
That was when I started joining singing competitions in our place and in nearby cities. My mother always encourages me to join and showcase my talent. I also took voice lessons to further enhance my talent and to learn more techniques in singing.
I had won several titles but there were also times when I did not get anything. But one thing is for sure, I had learned so much from joining competitions. Losing competitions made me a stronger person.
When I was about to enter college, I sent applications to several performing arts schools. But as much as I want to, I did not get a degree in Music. I wanted it badly but my father insisted that I finish a degree in Medicine. He said that there is no assurance that I will have a bright future if I pursue Music. Since they are paying for my studies, I had to obey my parents.
But even if I am in the medical school, I never let go of my dream to become a singer. One time, we were having dinner when I discovered that my two room mates could play different instruments. It was a long story but in the end, we decided to form a band and looked for other members also from our school. Everyday, after a toxic day of doing some essay paper and research papers and examining body organs from dead people, we jam to take away the stress. At the same time, this served as our practice just in case we were invited to perform for a certain event.
We performed at parties and other events in our school until one day, a businessman noticed us and invited us to perform at his bar and restaurant. Their customers may have liked our performance because after our first night, the owner asked that we perform at his place on a regular basis.
I am now a licensed doctor. I work as company doctor most days of the week and I perform during weekends. I did not disappoint my parents and at the same time I got to prove that I can still reach my dream in my own way.
